Yet another Gmu release for Dingoo, GP2X & Wiz (0.7.0_BETA6)

2009-09-15 05:23
Here is another Gmu release for all supported systems. It is mostly a bugfix release. The most important bugs that have been fixed with this release are the backlight-power-off issue and the volume issue, both only occuring on the Wiz. There are a few other changes which are applicable for all systems, though.

Grab the new Gmu release for your device here:

gmu-0.7.0_BETA6-GP2X.zip (0.8 MB)
gmu-0.7.0_BETA6-DINGOO.zip (0.8 MB)

Please note, that you will need the Open2X firmware to run this release on your GP2X. On the Wiz it runs with the default firmware. On the Dingoo you'll need the latest Dingux firmware release.

MmmRevolution: That is very strange. It works fine on my Dingoo. Do you see any message displayed on the top display when you press either left or right to adjust volume? There should appear a message for a few seconds (e.g. “VOLUME: 20/115″).
Did you extract the new Gmu version to a new folder or did you merge it with an older version (which you should never do)?

”There should appear a message for a few seconds (e.g. “VOLUME: 20/115?).”

I know, with version 0.7.0_BETA5 the control volume works!

”Did you extract the new Gmu version to a new folder or did you merge it with an older version (which you should never do)?”

Of course! It’s very strange, i have tested with dmenu and dinguXMD, with extension .dge or not…

I’ve just double-checked it again. I’ve extraced the Gmu .zip file to the sd card and then executed Gmu (via gmu.goo) from the dmenu file browser as well as through a menu entry in dmenu. In both cases I was able to use the volume control just fine.

Absolutely love Gmu. I use it on my wiz for when I am out at the gym working out and it works amazingly well. Thank you a lot for developing this program, and please keep up the good work!

Hi, j, do you have plan to support UTF-8? Because currently GMU only support western letters. If you need help, just tell me. :)
wejp (web) says:

vimrc: Gmu actually supports Unicode for UTF-8 and UTF-16 encoded metadata and UTF-8 filenames, but at the same time only supports those western letters. This is due to the fact that Gmu uses bitmap fonts to display text. I was thinking about supporting “true type ” fonts in the future, which would mean that full UTF-8 support would be possible (as long as the fonts used support all of those characters). It will still take a while until it will be ready, but I plan to support that eventually.

It would be great! There are ready codes about UTF-8 from Dmenu and Greader2X (http://greader2x.sourceforge.net/). I ported Greader2X to Dingux several weeks ago (not released yet, it included a cute audio player with libmikmod.) Maybe it is possible to grab the relevant code from them. Anyway, thanks a lot.

J,
While we are waiting for full UTF-8 support, can you share your tool that builds these png files with font bitmaps ? This will help me to create Russian and Hebrew skins to manage my music collection in the meantime.
Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Despite what’s written in your README, GMU does _not_ recognize module formats (XM, MOD, etc).

Whien I launch GMU, it seems the program is unable to load the mikmod library.

So, what’s wrong?
wejp (web) says:
2009-11-09 12:22:00
cax: Actually there is no tool for creating such fonts. Those are just fixed-width characters that appear in one line in the image file. The width and height of the characters can be defined in the skin configuration file. So it’s up to you how large a character should be. Also you need the character set two times. One for the normal text and one for the highlighted text.

240-185: On what kind of device are you running Gmu? You can verify if Gmu was able to load all decoder plugins by opening the “About Gmu” page (Modifier+A with default button mapping on all devices). There is a list of all loaded decoder plugins. There should appear six plugins on the list. The Module decoder is called “Mikmod module decoder v0.1″.

wejp,

I’ve created Russian fonts for classic skin – all letters are capital ones though, because small letters look too small on Dingoo’s screen and because I am too lazy to make them :)

I’d like to donate my work to gmu project, so where should I send these 3 png files ?

BTW, for some unknown reason russian file names appear in gibberish – I tried setting FileSystemCharset to ISO-5595-5, cp1251 and UTF-8 – nothing helps.

Another bug is DefaultFileBrowserPath setting doesn’t work at all – neither absolute nor relative paths. Strange things happen – I can’t describe, please try it yourself.

Other than that, player seems perfect for me.

GMU doesn’t show the artwork embedded in my mp3s.

Does it support embedded lyrics?
wejp (web) says:
2009-11-15 15:27:00
snakebyte: Gmu supports both artwork as well as lyrics embedded in mp3 files (with ID3v2 tags). Beware that the cover imnages must not exceed a certain size (due to the limited amount of available memory on the devices Gmu runs on). If your images are no larger than 300 x 300 pixels, you should be fine. Gmur scales images such that it fits on the screen.
If it still does not work for you, make sure cover artwork support has been enabled in the onfig file.

cax: On the “About” page of the website (first item in the menu on the right side), you’ll find my e-mail address. You are welcome to send me your fonts. :)

Thanks for pointing out that DefaultFileBrowserPath bug. It might very well be possible that I have forgotten to reenable that feature in the 0.7.0 series. I’ll have a look at that problem.

The filesystem charset problem is somewhat tricky. FAT, which is used on SD cards, does not support storing character set information at all. So there is nothing that would tell me, which charset has actually been used. :/

What is the tag lyric that GMU read?
snakebyte (web) says:
2009-11-15 16:20:00
I checked my mp3s.

They have covers no longer than 300×300.

And the option is on in my config file.

Maybe the player and the musics must be in the same memory? (I have gmu in nand and musics in sd)
snakebyte (web) says:
2009-11-15 16:29:00
I tried GMU and mp3s in the same memory (both in SD) same problem.

With Inkplayer i can see the artwork embedded in all my mp3s.

So where is the problem? :(

Hi, first of all, thanks for that very good player. But one wish (I know, people are never satisfied XD): Please gave the player the posibility to save a file on the SD Card (2X) with the track history. So that a external tool can use this to scrobble the listened music to last.fm and services like that. The format could be eigther json (http://json.org) or plain text. The history should contain the file path (relative to sd root) and a timestamp when the track has been played (relative to the time the 2x has been started). You have my mail, so I would be glad about a discussion :)
wejp (web) says:

GagaPeter: Interesting idea. That shouldn’t be very difficult to implement. So I consider adding such a feature for the next release. :)

Sorry for being late, I was very busy :(

I’m using GMU for Dingoo. In fact, although all the .so files are in the “decoders” folder and although the program says it found 6 decoders, he says he couldn’t find “mikmod.so”, and loaded only 3 of them. Looks like blindness.

Nevermind, it was the creators of a packaged DMenu who set the executable as “gmu” and not “gmu.goo”…
